Mrs. Rajashree Birla has for long been a trusted friend of Rotary in India. She has graciously endorsed and financially supported many of Rotary's humanitarian initiatives especially polio eradication programme, all through these years.

In recognition of her commitment and outstanding support to the polio eradication campaign, Rotary International presented Smt. Rajashree Birla, with its Polio Eradication Champion Award. The award was presented by Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. "As a fellow Rotarian, I'm always happy to see the amount of work Rotarians do. The Rotarians symbolize a culture of giving and caring which is strikingly close to our group's philosophy" she said.

Along with senior Rotarians – PRIP Raja Saboo, RI Director Ashok Mahajan, and Chairman Deepak Kapur - other dignitaries present at the award ceremony were Dr. Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat, Mr. Brij Mohan Munjal and Mr. Kumara Mangalam Birla.

A luncheon was hosted by Mrs. Rajashree Birla and Rotary International's INPPS at the Le Meridian Hotel in New Delhi on 5th November in honour of Mr. Bill Gates and family Mr. Bill Gates Sr. and sisters, Mrs. Kristi Blake & Mrs. Libby Armintrout. Many of India's industry icons and entrepreneurs attended this meeting along with senior Rotarians of India.

Microsoft Founder and Co-chair of the Gates Foundation, Bill Gates Jr. said, “India's leaders have made significant investments in order to protect 172 million children from polio. The commitment from everyone involved is impressive, especially Rotary International that has launched this worldwide programme. I am more than glad to be amongst you all and share our vision of a polio-free world.”

On the spot several major business and industry leaders committed huge sum of money for polio eradication in India. Mrs. Rajashree Birla led the way by committing a sum of US $ 1 million. Rotarian Harshad Mehta from Mumbai committed to contribute US $ 1.5 million over a period of 2 years. Mr. Rajnikant Shroff contributed a sum of US $ 250,000.

In May 2008, with Birla's encouragement, Usha Mittal, wife of Britain based steel tycoon, Mr. Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, generously pledged $1 million. As on Feb 2009 Both Ms. Birla & Ms. Mittal have increased their contribution to USD 1 million & USD 50,000 respectively.
